On Thursday evening, a suspected DUI crash resulted in the tragic deaths of three individuals at Corlears Hook Park, Manhattan. The incident occurred around 8:55 p.m. when a pickup truck, reportedly driving at a high rate of speed, barreled through an intersection, mounted the sidewalk, and collided with a crowd celebrating the holiday.

Impact and Casualties

The horrific crash left seven others injured, with varying degrees of severity. According to New York officials, two victims are in critical condition, three are in serious condition, and three others sustained non-serious injuries. The park, located on Manhattan’s Lower East Side next to the East River, was bustling with families enjoying a beautiful Fourth of July evening.

Mayor Eric Adams echoed this in his statement, describing the event as a tragedy that unfolded while families were barbecuing and enjoying the evening. Adams emphasized that the investigation is still in its early stages, with a thorough examination underway.

Maddrey noted that responding officers detected the smell of alcohol on the driver, but further testing is necessary to confirm impairment.
